Square dancing was a major social event in my home town. The maintenance garage in the background has been gone so long that I only vaguely remember it. They closed down one of the highways for this dance and the old courthouse is behind the photographer.

There was a square-dancing club with a hall in Smithland. This was THE happening place to be.

I cannot find my parents in the four photos of this dance, but this spry fellow is my Grandaddy Coot. (Yes, that’s what he was called.) According to my mother, he was quite good and all the gals wanted to dance with him.
I think this will be a separate history series that will focus on western Kentucky. I hoe you enjoyed this little snapshot of small-town history
